Our story
About Our Founder
René de la Tour founded Dupré Coins & Precious Metals after serving as lead numismatist at Jefferson Coin & Bullion, a leading rare coin brokerage in the United States at the time. From 1992 until 2008, René handled rare and valuable coins, building extensive experience in numismatics and the precious metals market.
Shortly afterward, René established Dupré Coins & Precious Metals from his home office, drawing on nearly 20 years of experience buying gold and silver bullion and selling rare coins. In 2012, four years after launching the business, he opened its first storefront, where the company continues to operate today.
Today, his son, William de la Tour, serves as CEO of Dupré Coins & Precious Metals, continuing René’s commitment to knowledgeable, personal service for collectors and precious metal investors.
The Story Behind Our Name
Dupré Coins & Precious Metals takes its name from Augustin Dupré, the French engraver who helped create the Libertas Americana medal. Commissioned by Benjamin Franklin near the end of the Revolutionary War, the medal commemorated American independence and France’s support for the young nation.
Its imagery tells that story through symbols: Liberty appears on the front, while the reverse depicts France protecting the infant America from a British lion. Our name honors Dupré’s artistry and the connection between numismatics and the history preserved in coins and medals.
From Prediction to Reality
James “Jim” Blanchard, a respected leader in the precious metals industry, was both a mentor and a close friend to René de la Tour. His guidance helped shape René’s understanding of the precious metals market and left a lasting influence on his approach to gold, silver, and numismatics.
Sadly James passed in 1999. Rene continues his remembrance of Jim Blanchard by telling a story of how he asked Jim his opinion on the future of the American dollar. Jim responded by saying, “It will be referred to as the American Peso in the foreseeable future!” A prediction that came true in the next 10 years, and still is declining today.
